The double ninth Chrysanthemum

重陽の菊

In the stored archives of Haibara there is a type of Japanese paper called “chiyogami”. These papers were designed by prominent artists from the Meiji period to the Showa period. In recent years, Haibara has started to revive it.“Double Ninth” is the ninth day of the ninth month in the Chinese calendar. On that day, Japan celebrates the Chrysanthemum Festival. Haibara’s “Double Ninth” chiyogami depicts patterns of chrysanthemum and it’s leaves. In Japan, the blooming of chrysanthemum signifies the arrival of the harvest season . Therefore the “Double Ninth” of Haibara means “Herald of goodness”.

Chiyogami is a type of Japanese paper with colored patterns. Traditional chiyogami patterns are created using wood block printing.

榛原には、明治から昭和にかけて活躍した作家が原画をデザインした千代紙が多数収蔵されており、近年より、それらの復刻を行っている。「重陽」とは、旧暦の9月9日のことであり、「菊の節句」とも呼ばれる。榛原の「重陽」は、菊花とその葉を図案化した千代紙であり、菊の花が咲くと、実りの秋がやってくることから「佳きことの先触れ」という意味が込められている。
