“RENEW/2023” Workshop Tour Event to Experience Fukui's Craftsmanship Scheduled for Launch

The industrial tourism event “RENEW” aimed at sustainable community development will be held from October 6 to 8, 2023. The hosting location, the Echizen Sabae area of Fukui Prefecture, is a region where traditional crafts such as Echizen lacquerware, Echizen washi paper, Echizen forged blades, Echizen cabinet, and Echizen ware, as well as local industries like eyeglasses and textiles, are concentrated within a 10 km radius. This area continues to adapt its craftsmanship to modern times while passing down the techniques. Recently, there has been an increase in young people moving to this area from outside. Last year, the event saw a return to its pre-COVID vibrancy, recording a total of 37,000 visitors. This year, its ninth occurrence, 94 local businesses including workshops, restaurants, and accommodations are expected to participate.

The main attraction of the event is the workshop tours. During the event, about 70 workshops producing items like lacquerware and washi paper will be open to the public. Visitors can watch the actual work processes and communicate directly with the craftsmen. One of the highlights of the event is the workshops, where companies put great effort into organizing. This year, workshops on eyeglass-making and paper-making experiences are planned. Following last year’s success, the “RENEW TRAVEL STAND” drink stand, where guests can enjoy drinks made from local products and discuss how to navigate the RENEW event, will also be featured. Knowledgeable local staff will introduce recommended workshops to visitors. Additionally, an event held concurrently with RENEW, the “City/People/Work – Localism Expo Fukui –,” will introduce socially significant activities being carried out nationwide, revolving around themes such as craftsmanship, lifestyle, food, education, welfare, community, IT, and disaster prevention.

This event grows in popularity with each iteration. Visitors are encouraged to experience the passion of the local craftsmen and their dedication to their craft firsthand.
