GALLERY SUGATA

Hida Sangyo Co., Ltd., a leading manufacturer and retailer of furniture and interior goods, is proud to announce the grand reopening of “YUHOKAN HIDA GALLERY” (hereafter “Yuhokan”) as a newly renovated cultural complex on October 4, 2025, in Takayama City, Gifu Prefecture. The facility now features a gallery, craft shop, and cafe, offering visitors an immersive experience of Japan’s rich woodworking and design heritage.
Located in the Hida Takayama region of Gifu, an area blessed with abundant forest resources, Yuhokan is situated in one of Japan’s premier furniture-producing regions. The area is renowned for the legendary “Hida no Takumi” (Hida master craftsmen) whose exceptional woodworking skills have been celebrated since the Asuka period (593-710). For over 25 years, Yuhokan has showcase the works of local artists through its gallery, earning the admiration of art and culture enthusiasts alike. After temporarily closing due to the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, the space underwent a full-scale renovation beginning last year, and is now ready to welcome visitors once again. The redesign was led by renowned architect Yoshifumi Nakamura and furniture designer Makoto Koizumi.
The revitalized Yuhokan serves as a vibrant hub for promoting Japan’s rich woodworking culture into the future. It offers experiences that celebrate the warmth of wood and the beauty of handcrafted living. The gallery showcases works by craft artists who explore unique expressions through a deep connection with their materials. The shop features original HIDA furniture, forest-scented aromatherapy items, handcrafted works by local artists, and high-quality woodworking tools. Conveniently located in the heart of Takayama’s tourist district, Yuhokan also welcomes international visitors with a thoughtfully curated selection of products.
The cafe invites guests to savor meals and desserts crafted from seasonal local ingredients, complemented by carefully brewed coffee, all served on handmade tableware by local artists. Seating includes new chairs designed by woodwork artist Ryuji Mitani, set to be launched this fall under HIDA, a brand operated by Hida Sangyo.
To celebrate the grand reopening, the gallery will host a special exhibition titled “3 materials,” curated by Ryuji Mitani, beginning October 4. This unique exhibition brings together three artists, each working with different materials, to create a series of collaborative works. The opening will also feature talk sessions and live woodworking demonstrations.
Visit the all-new Yuhokan and immerse yourself in a world where the warmth of wood meets the artistry of craftsmanship.
