POJ Studio, a brand that develops lifestyle products rooted in traditional Japanese techniques and aesthetics and designed to complement modern living, has opened a new hub in Gojo, Kyoto. This space is dedicated to experiencing the charm of Japanese crafts through “seeing,” “touching,” and “learning,” allowing visitors to deeply appreciate their artistry.
The three-story space, renovated from Kyoto’s machiya (traditional townhouse) over 100 years old, is entirely shaped by artisans associated with POJ Studio. It features washi paper furnishings, with interiors by washi artist Wataru Hatano, high-quality tatami mats by tatami craftsman Mitsuru Yokoyama, a custom entrance lantern and noren (fabric divider), and fixtures made from domestically sourced lumber. The store showcases handcrafted items from artisans across Japan, allowing visitors to feel the skill and story behind each piece. The studio also hosts seasonal artisan exhibitions and kintsugi (the art of repairing pottery with lacquer and gold) workshops, as well as offers a repair service for tableware using the kintsugi method.
POJ Studio launched its e-commerce business in 2020, followed by its first physical store in Kyoto in 2022. The studio currently promotes the appeal of Japanese crafts both domestically and internationally through pop-up stores in Hong Kong, Los Angeles, and New York. With the opening of this new hub, the company plans to launch “POJ Studio Interior,” an interior consulting service for commercial and residential spaces. Additionally, it will develop educational programs aimed at the succession of artisan skills and cultural revitalization, such as a woodworking apprenticeship program in the Keihoku area in Kyoto. POJ Studio is set to further expand its activities to deliver the beauty of Japanese craftsmanship and artistry to the world.
We highly recommend visiting to POJ Studio’s new location to experience Japanese crafts on a more personal level.
