The Bizen Pottery Museum was reborn and held its grand opening as the “Bizen City Museum of Art” on July 12, 2025. In addition to showcasing contemporary ceramics, especially Bizen ware, the museum will present a diverse range of artworks, including contemporary art, architecture, and design from around the world. With the goal of becoming a cultural creation hub for the region, the museum also seeks to promote the appeal of contemporary Bizen ceramics both in Japan and abroad, and establishing itself as a beloved destination for all visitors.
The building was designed by architect Kiyoshi Sakurai, based on the theme of “natural beauty” — a concept deeply connected to Bizen ware which expresses aesthetic value through clay and fire. Emphasizing the inherent beauty of materials, the design features natural stone from Setouchi region for the stairs and flooring. The space is unified by a refined monotone color scheme, creating a calm and dignified atmosphere. At the center of the entrance hall, visitors are greeted by a huge Bizen ware monument titled “Memories of Earth and Fire,” created by Jun Isezaki, a Living National Treasure. This powerful work greets visitors with an overwhelming presence, setting the tone for a rich, immersive museum experience and hints at the artistic treasures within.
To celebrate its grand opening, the Bizen City Museum of Art is hosting two simultaneous exhibitions. “Picasso and His Ceramics: An Odyssey in Color and Form” presents 36 rare ceramic works and 2 linocuts by the world-renowned artist Pablo Picasso. These vibrant pieces, filled with free-spirited ideas and playful energy, convey Picasso’s pure joy in creation and his bold exploration of form and color.
The second exhibition, “Bizen Contemporary Ceramic Art: Extraordinary Masterpieces,” an exhibition that bring together the works of 37 ceramic artists who carry on the 800-year tradition of Bizen ware. Divided into two terms, the exhibition features both masters artisans and emerging talents, offering visitors a rich experience of contemporary Bizen ceramics where tradition meets innovation.
In addition to the exhibition, a range of special programs such as gallery talks and hand-on workshops will be held to enhance your visit. Come explore the diverse world of ceramics at the Bizen City Museum of Art — a place where heritage and creativity come together.
