ORIGAMI is a Mino ware brand specializing in coffee-related products, beloved by baristas and coffee enthusiasts around the world. Through its “with Makers Project,” the brand collaborates across regional and industrial boundaries to develop products that convey the stories of their creation — including the artisans involved, the production processes, and the rich culture of Japanese craftsmanship.
For the third edition of the project, ORIGAMI collaborated with Maruyoshi Kosaka, a Kiso lacquerware maker based in Nagano Prefecture. While lacquerware production is often carried out through a division of labor, Maruyoshi Kosaka handles both the creation of wooden bases and the application of lacquer in-house. The company actively innovates product development to suit modern lifestyles, even developing a unique technique known as “urushi-glass,” which involves applying lacquer to glass and establishing their own brand. This collaboration features urushi-glass products alongside other pieces that showcase the company’s exceptional lacquer craftsmanship.
The ORIGAMI dripper is distinguished by its signature ribbed design, which is both beautiful and functional. However, its distinctive shape makes it difficult to apply conventional ceramic painting techniques to the surface. Rather than treating this as a limitation, the artisans embraced the form as an advantage, carefully hand-painting lines along the ribs with colored lacquer made by adding minerals and pigments to raw lacquer. The result is a striking design of vibrant, colorful stripes. The aroma glass server, designed to coordinate with the dripper, features a playful pattern of freely drawn, relaxed lines. As each piece is hand-painted by artisans, the length and number of lines vary slightly, making every product a truly unique, one-of-a-kind piece.
The collaboration also includes another style of aroma glass server finished with translucent amber lacquer. Over time, the lacquer gradually becomes brighter and more translucent, allowing the piece to develop its own unique character. A dripper holder made of cherry wood and finished with hand-applied black lacquer is also included, with a smooth texture designed to comfortably fit in the hand. These products offer an opportunity to appreciate the beauty of Japanese craftsmanship while enjoying coffee. They will be available in limited quantities through the ORIGAMI online store from August 31, 2026, with sales continuing until stock runs out. More stories behind the production can be found on brand website.
