Lei, a lifestyle brand recognized with prestigious international design awards including the Red Dot Design Award and iF Design Award, will open Lei Gallery Tokyo this month. The new art space will be housed within its Lei In Praise of Shadows Flagship Store, which opened in Yoyogi-Uehara, Tokyo, in January 2026.

Lei Gallery Tokyo aims to share the aesthetic sensibilities rooted in materials, craftsmanship, and culture with audiences in Japan and around the world through exhibitions by artists and artisans, as well as its gallery program. To mark the opening of the new art space, “Tasuku Murose Exhibition: Crossing Mountains and Clouds” will be held from June 27 to July 4, 2026.

Born in Tokyo as the second son of renowned lacquer artist Kazumi Murose, Tasuku Murose established Atelier Yamanoha in 2023 in the Okukuji region of Ibaraki Prefecture, one of Japan’s leading lacquer-producing areas, as he embarked on his independent career. Around the same time, he also opened Nakanokumo, a cultural exchange space in Nakano, Tokyo. Working between these two locations, Murose has expanded his practice beyond creating artworks to engage in a wide range of activities that explore and promote the art of lacquer. Murose also played a key role in the completion of the Lei In Praise of Shadows Flagship Store. Under his supervision, the tabletops of the store’s display fixtures were finished using the traditional fuki-urushi (wiping lacquer) technique. By carefully selecting the base wood and applying multiple layers of lacquer while preserving the natural beauty of the wood grain, the interior expresses the aesthetic philosophy of “In Praise of Shadows,” creating a space defined by subtle textures, depth, and quiet elegance.

Marking Tasuku Murose’s first solo exhibition, the show will primarily present new works created during his recent years as a lacquer artist. Set within a serene space shaped by an aesthetic of light and shadow, visitors are invited to experience the delicate beauty of maki-e and the rich depth and subtle gradations unique to lacquer.
