Kyoto’s Luxury Hotel “ROKU KYOTO” Will Offer a Special Program to Experience the History and Traditional Culture of Gion Festival

ROKU KYOTO, LXR Hotels & Resorts will offer an exclusive “Gion Festival Yamahoko Junko Viewing Program” for hotel guests, providing a special opportunity to experience the rich history and traditions of the Gion Festival. The program will take place during the Saki Matsuri (Former Festival) on July 17 and the Ato Matsuri (Latter Festival) on July 24, 2026, as the highlight of the Gion Festival.

ROKU KYOTO is a luxury hotel that opened in 2021 in Takagamine, Kyoto, a historic area where Hon’ami Koetsu — an influential figure in Japanese culture known for his contributions to calligraphy, ceramics, and other arts — established an artistic community during the Edo period. Nestled at the foot of the Takagamine mountains and surrounded by the natural beauty of the Tenjin River flowing through the property, the hotel offers a tranquil setting unique to the area. Guided by the concept of “Dive into Kyoto,” ROKU KYOTO provides guests with immersive experiences that reveal the city’s rich history, culture, and natural surroundings. This special program further embodies that philosophy, offering opportunities to engage with the festivals, traditional culture, and craftsmanship that have been nurtured through more than a thousand years of Kyoto’s history.

The program includes viewing the Yamahoko Junko, the Gion Festival’s iconic float procession, from comfortable indoor seating with bilingual commentary in Japanese and English. Participants will also have the opportunity to experience traditional ozashiki entertainment and a dance performance by maiko from Kamishichiken, Kyoto’s oldest kagai (geisha district), as well as a miniature wagasa (traditional Japanese umbrella) making workshop led by a craftsman from Tsujikura, Japan’s oldest umbrella maker. In addition, a yakuyoke chimaki (protective talisman) associated with the festival’s Yamahoko floats will be provided as a meaningful keepsake.

As one of the Japan’s three major festivals, the Gion Festival, attracts large crowds every year. This program offers more than just the opportunity to view the festival — it provides an immersive experience of Kyoto’s rich traditional culture, combined with a resort stay in a tranquil setting away from the bustle of the city. Together, these experiences promise to create lasting and unforgettable memories. Program details and reservation information are available on the website.
