Each of the plates in Kyoto-based bamboo craft artist Chiemi Ogura’s collection, “Seasonal Plates,” features a pattern symbolizing its respective season: spring is represented by peonies, summer by clematis, autumn by chrysanthemums, and winter by snow. The delicate woven patterns reflect the artist’s deep love for the changing seasons, creating an appealing expression full of charm and sentiment. The addition of such beautiful designs to these easy-to-use individual plates enriches one’s daily life with vibrant beauty.
In Japanese bamboo crafts, various weaving techniques have been developed over time. Today, it is said that combining these techniques makes possible over 200 different weaving methods. Chiemi uses bamboo strips carefully shaped to widths and thicknesses within 0.1 millimeters, effectively combining traditional weaving techniques to meticulously craft thoughtfully designed pieces. The process of creating these works is undeniably challenging, requiring attention to detail from the overall balance to the composition of the smallest elements. This piece can truly be regarded as a top-quality work that showcases the artist’s skill and Japan’s aesthetic sensibility.
