White porcelain and the potter’s wheel

Based in Arita, Saga Prefecture, ceramic artist Seigo Nakamura continually explores sculptural forms inspired by beetles. White Porcelain Jar is one such work, translating the taut curves of a beetle’s shell and the strength it holds within into an organic form. After shaping the jar on the potter’s wheel, Nakamura works while the clay is still soft, pressing outward by hand from inside the jar. By creating bold, swelling contours within an otherwise balanced silhouette, he gives the piece a rich sense of volume. The white porcelain softly catches the light, revealing quiet shadows and a subtle luster. Beneath its serene appearance lies a quiet intensity.

In white porcelain, where there is no decorative embellishment to rely on, form itself defines the overall impression. Grounded in traditional wheel-throwing techniques, Seigo earnestly pursues what he calls “forms that can only emerge from the potter’s wheel.” As the wheel turns, he senses the nature of the clay through his hands, guiding the form in response to its movement. His work, unconstrained by preconceived notions, points toward new possibilities for contemporary white porcelain.
