The exhibition “A Feast for the Eyes: Tableware” will be held at the Suntory Museum of Art in Roppongi, Tokyo, from July 8 through August 30, 2026. Focusing on ceramic and porcelain tableware primarily from the Momoyama and Edo periods (16th – 19th centuries), the exhibition embodies the museum’s guiding concept of “Art in Life.”

Magnificent large plates, elegant bowls, and distinctive mukozuke serving dishes are among the exhibition’s highlights. Their shapes and decorative motifs convey wishes for good fortune, an appreciation of the changing seasons, and even a desire to impress guests with rare and extraordinary vessels.

While tableware is fundamentally created to serve food, this exhibition reveals a beauty that transcends its practical purpose. Together with exquisite cuisine, these visually captivating vessels create what can truly be called “a feast for the eyes.” Visitors may be surprised to discover that such sophisticated aesthetics of dining and presentation had already reached a remarkable level of refinement more than 400 years ago.

The exhibition brings together tableware from a wide range of production centers, including Arita, Imari, Karatsu, and Mino, alongside ceramics and porcelains imported from China and other regions abroad. The remarkable diversity of domestic and international wares cherished by the Japanese reflects their enduring curiosity and profound appreciation for outstanding ceramics.

A variety of related events will be held throughout the exhibition period. On July 12, Toru Yoda, Chief Curator of the Toyama Memorial Museum, will deliver a commemorative lecture titled “Japanese Cuisine and Tableware.” In addition, on July 25 and 26, Shio Tsukuda, heir to the Issa-an sencha tea school, will host special tea gatherings, where participants can enjoy sencha tea and sweets while viewing the artworks. The program offers a rare opportunity to experience the culture of vessels and hospitality through all five senses. Special talks entitled “Tableware Is Cuisine” by a culinary expert Yoshiharu Doi will also be held on July 17 and August 15.

By appreciating the form and craftsmanship of each piece, visitors can gain a deeper understanding of the seasonal sensibilities, playful spirit, and hospitality embraced by people centuries ago. This exhibition also invites audiences to reconsider the role of tableware in modern life, offering fresh perspectives on how thoughtfully chosen vessels can enrich the experience of everyday dining.
