“Utsuwa no Aki,” an event where visitors can enjoy works by eight artists from five Fukawa-Hagi kilns will be held again this year in the Nagato Yumoto Onsen district from October 2 to November 3, 2026.
The theme of this year’s event is “Chaka Ippuku (A Moment of Savoring Tea and Sweets).” A collaboration with wagashi (traditional Japanese sweets) artist Sae Ippozumi — known for her creations that express the transience and beauty of nature — has come to fruition. Specially crafted traditional Japanese sweets designed to complement Fukawa-Hagi ware can be enjoyed with tea at various locations throughout the hot spring town. On October 17 and 18, Ippozumi will hold live demonstrations of traditional Japanese sweets-making at Onto plaza. It promises to be a luxurious experience, where visitors can savor matcha and wagashi while enjoying a conversation between wagashi artist Ippozumi and the Fukawa-Hagi artists.
Furthermore, from October 9 to November 10, the “Yudo Exhibition” will be held at Nagato Yumoto Onsen, Onto, which received the top prize of “Yudo Culture Award” in 2023. The exhibition will feature bathing implements created by Shinbe Sakakura XVI.
In addition to the exhibition at the main venue “Machi no Bandai,” numerous events are planned at satellite venues and stores scattered throughout the hot spring town, offering opportunities to experience the Hagi ware culture that thrives in Sonose. We invite you to take a leisurely stroll through the town and enjoy discovering the charm of Fukawa-Hagi.
