ZOZO NEXT Launches “Yobiiro,” a New Project Merging Traditional Crafts with Advanced Technology

ZOZO NEXT has officially launched “Yobiiro,” a new project centered on the fusion of traditional Japanese craftsmanship and cutting-edge technology. The initiative aims to combine Japan’s traditional materials and techniques with modern technologies to propose innovative products for contemporary society. The project interprets the subtle shifts in light, fragrance, and temperature inherent in materials and crafts as iro (colors). Much like yobimizu – priming water that draws a rich flow from a well – this experimental approach seeks to evoke and call forth new sensory experiences in people.

In January 2026, the first collection of products and prototypes from the project was unveiled at the urban creative festival “TOKYO PROTOTYPE.” The lineup highlights the diversity of this fusion, featuring “Seikyo,” a lighting fixture that blends phosphorescent materials with the 300-year-old tradition of Nao washi paper; “URUSHICA,” which reimagines Echizen lacquerware by incorporating heat-resistant resin to enhance its practicality for modern daily use; and “Hitotose,” a vase that merges porcelain with smart materials designed to change color in response to temperature fluctuations. These products are currently featured on the official Yobiiro website, with select items available for general purchase starting January 29.

ZOZO NEXT has a history of continuous engagement in applying advanced technologies within the craft sector. Previous initiatives include “Ambient Weaving,” a joint research project with the University of Tokyo and the historic Nishijin-ori company Hosoo, and “Artisan,” a project aimed at re-evaluating and revitalizing Japanese craftsmanship. Yobiiro is positioned as an important step in further deepening these research efforts and advancing them toward practical social implementation.

ZOZO NEXT aims to realize a society where technology empowers people to enjoy fashion and lifestyle more freely. Moving forward, the company plans to accelerate the co-creation of traditional crafts and advanced technology, continuing its pursuit of new creative value that supports the lifestyles of the future.
