This wooden mobile represents the utmost expression of the ancient art of Kumiko, an intricate technique of wood joinery. A series of pieces of wood are carefully arranged one by one to create an elegantly flowing curved surface, the light falling between them appearing as sunlight filtering through water. Its shadows, swaying in the gentle breeze, reflect the deep Japanese aesthetic of appreciation for nature.

- Generic term
- Technique
The art of wood joinery without using any nails or glue, or the techniques of doing so. The wood is meticulously prepared with holes and grooves and then the pieces assembled one by one. This technique, which began in the Asuka period (592 – 710), was mainly used for framing and decoration of shoji screen and ranma transoms. The delicate patterns and unique shadows that emerge when held up to the light are truly enchanting.
