Shitsurindo, an Echizen lacquerware manufacturer based in Fukui Prefecture, and ZOZO NEXT, a company engaged in research and development that leverages technology in fashion industry, have announced the launch of a joint research initiative. This collaboration aims to develop new lacquer techniques that merge traditional craftsmanship with cutting-edge technology.
Since its founding in 1793, Shitsurindo has been producing Echizen lacquerware as essential tools for daily life. While inheriting historic techniques, the company is also proactive in developing products that adapt to modern lifestyles. In recent years, it has collaborated with Fukui Prefecture and the University of Fukui to create “Echizen Hard Lacquer,” a dishwasher-safe lacquerware material, continuing its pursuit of enhancing lacquer’s functional applications for contemporary use. ZOZO NEXT, on the other hand, is working on various projects related to Japanese crafts. These include collaborative research on innovative textiles that integrate traditional techniques with advanced materials and interactive technologies to achieve both functionality and aesthetic appeal. Additionally, through the “Artisan” section of its web media platform “Fashion Tech News,” the company shares content that highlights the charm and value of traditional crafts.
Through this joint research, Shitsurindo’s expertise in lacquerware production, which incorporates scientific methods while maintaining lacquer’s inherent beauty, will be combined with ZOZO NEXT’s knowledge of advanced materials and technology. Together, they aim to develop new lacquer techniques that excel in both function and design. In the future, these innovations could be applied to a diverse range of products, from lacquerware to fashion items, expanding beyond the boundaries of traditional craft carrying the legacy of lacquer culture into the modern age and beyond.
