“Craft x Tech Tokai Project” to Hold Exhibition in Tokyo: A Collaboration Between Traditional Crafts from the Tokai Region and Internationally Acclaimed Creators

“Craft x Tech Tokai Project 2026 Tokyo Exhibition,” an exhibition showcasing newly created works born from collaborations between craftspeople from Japan’s Tokai region and internationally active creators, will be held at kudan house, a Registered Tangible Cultural Property located in Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo, from May 30 to June 2, 2026.

Led by the art and design studio Tangent, “Craft x Tech” is an experimental and artistic project that reexamines the sensibilities embedded in Japanese craftsmanship, as well as the essence of the thought processes and handwork involved in making. Following the 2024 Tohoku edition, this second installment brings together six craft producers from the Tokai region’s three prefecturers and six internationally acclaimed creators, presenting new expressions of craft to the world for the first time.

Having flourished as a vital crossroads along the historic Tokaido and Nakasendo routes, the Tokai region has long benefited from rich ceramic clay and clear flowing rivers, fostering the development of artisanal techniques and commerce. Participating in this edition are six makers representing the region’s diverse manufacturing culture: Fudogama (Mino ware), Warabi Paper Company (Mino washi paper), Suzusan (Arimatsu-Narumi shibori), Ando Cloisonne (Owari cloisonne), Shingama (Seto sometsuke ware), and Itogo (Iga kumihimo braiding).

Each has been paired with one of six creators — David Caon, Lanzavecchia + Wai, Bethan Laura Wood, Philippe Malouin, Eugene Kangawa (Eugene Studio), and Atang Tshikare — to collaboratively develop innovative works that transcend conventional functions and formats while drawing on the traditional materials and techniques unique to each production area. Through collaboration with practitioners active in industrial design and contemporary art, the project expands the possibilities of craft through diverse creative perspectives.

Hideki Yoshimoto, founder of Tangent and creative director of the project, views craft not as a fixed tradition, but as a dynamic practice that continuously evolves over time. This perspective is encapsulated in the phrase “Craft as Response.” According to Yoshimoto, craft has always developed through responses to the changing conditions of each era — including nature, technology, society, and the economy. Through this exhibition, the project not only presents the current state of craft today, but also points toward future possibilities for its continued evolution.
